Since the global financial crisis, high youth-unemployment rates have been a problem across the world. One region that has been hit particularly hard by this problem is Europe — in both its developed economies and its emerging ones. In a recent note to clients,Bank of America Merrill Lynch’s Michael Hartnett and Brian Leung shared a chart showing the youth-unemployment rates across EU countries.
Overall, the EU youth-unemployment rate is about 20%. However, the countries with the highest rates — Greece, Spain, Croatia, and Italy – are all in the stunningly high 40% to 50% zone. These numbers are among the highest in the world. The countries with relatively low youth-unemployment rates – including Denmark, the Czech Republic, and the Netherlands- are close to 10%. Germany’s is about 7%.
Research shows that there are three main reasons why young unemployment is high. These are;
1-) Lack of Job Experience and not being adequate/Not having a Job
2-) Not having the sufficent individual experience and skills needed, mainly Foreign Langauge , professional internship, communication ,Team work.
3-) Deficiencies in finding a suitable job for themselves.(Not being able to use online tools in an adequate manner , Preparing CV , Interview techniques , Individual Research Skill , Unawareness in appropriate company-required competence)
Landing a job in this tough economy is no easy feat—especially for disadvantaged young people. They often spend weeks scouring online job boards, polishing cover letters and blasting out résumés to no avail. But what they really need to do is get an internship. It turns out that may be the easiest way to secure a full-time gig,as 69% of companies with 100 or more employees offered full-time jobs to their interns in 2015, according to a new survey.(McKinsey)
Developing new employment opportunities for young people is the one of main priorities forErasmus+ Programme. Strategic Partnerships for youth KA205 projects have many tools for developing new skills and matching labor market needs for young people.
“3I – International Internship Incubation” Erasmus+ KA205 project is designed by European Development Institute experts (Mustafa Memis, Tania Santos, Esra Gonen, Patrick Bosteels) to built upon the problems and needs that are defined above.
